Description

Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz Riesling Schäwer GG 2023 (bio)

Information about the wine

The Rebholz brothers’ fourth Großes Riesling comes from the Burrweiler Schäwer. There are no references to previous vintages here; this wine is new territory, as it comes from a slate site that is rarely found anywhere else in the region. It extends to 300 meters below the edge of the forest. The wine was matured after destemming and a 24-hour maceration. After preliminary clarification and natural sedimentation, fermentation took place in stainless steel and then aged on the fine lees for six months.

Colour

Medium straw yellow

Nose

The 2023 Burrweiler Schäwer is fragrant, floral, and subtly fruity, combined with a slightly oily slate note and a hint of incense. It also has a steely quality, which isn’t necessarily foreign to Riesling from Schieder. The overtones are notes of herbs and white blossoms with a hint of jasmine.

Palate

On the palate, this Großes Gewächs presents itself with a light texture, tart notes of apple peel, a touch of anise, verbena, and lemon zest. The maceration also provides good grip on the palate, and the slate lends a lively minerality. This is a purist wine that fits very well with the Rebholz style.

Wine Advocate

Score: 96

Exclusively from the vines that were planted in 1983, the Burrweiler 2023 Schäwer Riesling trocken GG is intense as well as pure and flinty on the saline and nicely reductive, herbal/lemony nose with bay leaf and even caramelly notes. Very elegant, refined and light-footed on the palate, this is a pleasantly textured, frisky and stimulating saline Riesling with fine mineral grip and a perfect expression of slate. This is a stellar Schäwer from just a 0.1-hectare plot of 40-year-old vines. All vines that are younger go into the vom Schiefer. This is Riesling based on perfectly ripe and heathy fruit and a great, crystalline and saline terroir. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2025.

Vinous

Score: (95-97)

The 2023 Riesling Burrweiler Schäwer Grosses Gewächs is sourced from a rare parcel of Devonian slate. Reduction allows the merest glimpse of citrus with a fringe of ivy. The palate is a reflection of tangerine juiciness—bright, vibrant, beautifully tart and ripe at the same time. It is absolutely citric, taut, zesty, juicy and as clear as a bell. Totally focused.
