Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2022 (bio)
Information about the location
The Kastanienbusch lies west of Birkweiler. The core of the site is located in a valley basin formed by the slopes of the Taschberg to the east, the Kleinenberg and Hohenberg to the north and west, and the Kastanienbusch to the south. This completely shields the Kastanienbusch from the cold air flowing in from the Palatinate Forest. The vineyards lie 220 to 320 m above sea level and have gradients of up to 40%. The more than 2-hectare “Kastanienbusch original parcel” of the Rebholz winery lies in the uppermost area; the south-southeast slope, with gradients of up to 35%, is the highest-lying GG vineyard in the Palatinate at 280 to 320 m above sea level. The entire property of more than 4 hectares is located exclusively in the 20.8-hectare core. The faults of the Rhine Graben have caused significant uplift in the area around Birkweiler, Albersweiler, and Frankweiler, revealing very old and otherwise very deep-lying geological formations. Thus, the most famous and original part of the Kastanienbusch vineyard is largely made up of rocks from the “Upper Rotliegend” (Upper Rotliegend), which formed at the beginning of the Permian geological period 280 million years ago. They consist of loose deposits of angular granite, slate, or melaphyre. Due to the high iron content, the soil is dark red (rust) and has very good heat storage capacity.
Information on Vinification
After selective hand-picking in several harvests, the grapes were destemmed. A 24-hour maceration period was followed by gentle pressing. Pre-clarification was achieved through natural sedimentation of the must lees, and the must was then fermented in stainless steel tanks. After 5 months of aging on the full lees, racking followed in March 2023 and bottling in July 2023.
Colour
Sparkling golden yellow.
Nose
The 2022 Riesling “Birkweiler Kastanienbusch” GG presents itself, as usual in its youth, still somewhat closed and clearly distinctive on the nose. Immediately after opening, it needs one thing above all: air, air, air. After a day of opening, it then reveals itself with the typical apple, citrus, and vineyard peach notes, but also with aromas of earth, smoke, a touch of tree bark, wild herbs, and pepper. It is still holding back at the moment and does not want to fully let us in. But one can already sense the beauty and fireworks that this wine will reveal to us with some maturity.
Palate
The 2022 Riesling “Birkweiler Kastanienbusch” GG presents itself on the tongue with a similarly powerful aroma as it does on the nose, combining with a distinctively fresh acidity that provides a beautiful counterpoint to the spicy and earthy components that are just as clearly perceived on the tongue as in the nose. Here, too, the Rebholz family has succeeded in creating a wine with this Großes Gewächs that shines with its low alcohol content and demonstrates that power and expression can be achieved excellently even with a moderate 12.5% alcohol by volume. A few days of opening enhance its beautiful elegance and complexity, so if you want to enjoy it at this youthful stage, you should definitely open and decant it early.
