Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2021 (bio)
Information about the Wine
West of the town of Birkweiler lies the “Kastanienbusch” vineyard on the edge of a valley basin, where it is protected from the cool winds blowing from the Palatinate Forest. Characterized by the iron-rich Oberrotliegend (Upper Rotliegend) soil, this vineyard, at 320 meters above sea level, is the highest GG vineyard in the Palatinate. The vineyard, made up of loose granite, slate, and melaphyre deposits, has a gradient of 30 to 35%. The Rebholz plots belong to the original plot of the Kastanienbusch vineyard. The wine was vinified after destemming and a 24-hour maceration period. After preliminary clarification and natural sedimentation, fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks and a six-month aging on the fine lees.
Colour
Bright lemon yellow
Nose
When you hold Rebholz’s Kastanienbusch in your glass, you know pretty immediately what you’re dealing with. The wine has that typical herbal scent and a hint of forest and meadow, and even a hint of forest honey (if I were to write “chestnut honey” now, it would seem a bit cheesy). At the same time, the Riesling offers notes of verbena and lemon balm, apple and apple peel, a touch of cassis, and even a hint of passion fruit. By “a touch,” I mean that this is a subtle, not overtly overpowering component of this wine, but one that pleasantly broadens the spectrum.
Palate
On the palate, the Kastanienbusch initially appears very juicy, very fresh, and very young. On a base of lemon curd, there are white blossoms and again some verbena and lemon balm, along with pear and peach slices. Suddenly, the wine picks up speed, fanning out, becoming increasingly powerful and offering ever-increasing pressure on the palate. Just like the turbo lag in a car, where you step on the gas, for a moment less happens than you think, only to suddenly feel a surge. The Kastanienbusch 2021 is such a turbo wine, becoming increasingly smoky and stony with air and warmth, increasingly vibrant and demanding, increasingly firm and grippy. The greatness of this wine is revealed in its prancing appearance, in this feigned lightness that conceals immense depth.
