Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2020 (bio)The Kastanienbusch is surrounded by the chestnut trees that give it its name. Its soils date back to the Permian period, which formed around 280 million years ago. As one of the highest sites in the southern Palatinate Forest, the Kastanienbusch lies at up to 320 meters above sea level, making it the highest VDP-classified site in the Palatinate. The Rebholz part of the Kastanienbusch is limited to a valley basin with a steep south-facing slope. There, the extremely long-lasting GGs grow on Rotliegendes (roty soils) composed of loose granite, slate, and melaphyre deposits. The hand-picked grapes were destemmed and, after 24 hours of maceration, fermented in steel.

Nose

The 2020 Kastanienbusch Riesling Großes Gewächs from Ökonomierat Rebholz always reveals its secretive side in its youthful stage. With a subtle spice in the overtones, it is reminiscent of red pepper and rock flour. Dark and warm, it is currently outlined by red currant, lemon zest, herbal spice, allspice, and vetiver. Experience has shown that closed and firm, the Kastanienbusch needs a very long time before its aroma fully unfolds. Timely decanting is therefore essential, and sufficient bottle aging is more than recommended.

Palate

Firm and fleshy on the palate, it is outlined by stimulating phenolics with animating astringency. Lemon and grapefruit zest are flanked by herbs and red Kampot pepper. With a pleasant warmth on the palate, it is purist and clear, without any aromatic ornamentation. It rises like a flagpole on the palate, vertical and straightforward, orchestrated by youthful acidity and driven to its zenith. Closed and firm, it currently offers a rather perspective wine experience that will richly reward the patient drinker. Great.
