Product description for Odinstal Weissburgunder 350 N.N. 2023 (bio)
Info
The Pinot Blanc grows on three soil formations in Odinstal: Keuper, Bunter sandstone, and basalt, at an altitude of 350 meters. The vines were planted there in 1988 and 2004. The grapes were harvested here from September 21 to 28 and fermented in stainless steel tanks. 5% was processed as whole bunches. The must, and later the wine, was allowed to mature on the full lees for seven months. Before bottling, it was lightly filtered, and a small amount of 56 mg/l sulphur was added.
Colour
Light straw yellow with golden reflections and a light rim.
Nose
Yeast and oxidation are initially clearly noticeable. This suggests that the wine has experienced both healthy must oxidation and long maturation on the lees. Peace and quiet have been Andreas Schumann’s stylistic devices since the beginning. This results in a compact, nutty tone. Walnuts, in the form of green fruits as well as shells, Brazil nuts, and almonds. Butterscotch and yeast pastries testify to the long aging on the lees. Salted caramel and tarte tatin. Candied quince and ginger. Enormously complex aromas. Local fruits as well as exotic ones. This culminates in grilled pineapple. Lime zest and blood orange juice round it off vibrantly. A hint of turmeric and star anise mingle with it. Fennel seed and dried herbs in the form of oregano, sage, and thyme provide a profound, ethereal nuance.
Palate
On the palate, this Weißburgunder from the higher elevations of the Palatinate is full-bodied and powerful. It is robust and compact with an astringent acidity as a contrast. The fruit is very restrained. Candied and dried fruits can be seen in the background. In contrast, the dried herbs dominate the nose. Its texture is much more exciting. With a slender mouthfeel and full of lightness, it manages to build up plenty of acidity. The Weissburgunder, however, lacks any melting power and can be described as rather austere. Its finish, on the other hand, is vertical and enormously stretched out. Magnificent. The aftertaste then reveals its nutty side again.
