Information about the wine

The Odinstal Monopol Riesling is named so because it comes from the winery’s Monopol site. This site is characterized by basalt, shell limestone, red sandstone, and Keuper soils above Wachenheim. It is the highest GG site in the Palatinate. Naturally, fermentation took place spontaneously here, and the wine was aged for a long time in large barrels with minimal sulfurization.

Nose

Andreas Schumann’s Riesling Monopol Großes Gewächs is an intense, pure, clear wine, but with a typical blend of light reduction and volatile acidity. Only very light, so not overpowering, but sexy. Added to this are notes of yellow-fleshed stone fruit, crumbly apple, fennel greens, anise, lemon balm, lemon, iodine, and sourdough.

Palate

On the palate, this is a typical Schumann-style textured and structured wine with a fine grip, salt, a silky yet gripping acidity, and a deep minerality. Layers of thinly sliced, almost transparent light fruit from lemons, apples, pears, quinces, and mirabelle plums lie above. Added to this are herbs such as verbena, lemon balm, and chamomile, then some crushed stone. All of this swirls and forms a unity, long and deep, yet floating.

The intense yellow-colored 2022 Odinstal Monopol Riesling GG shows a deep, intense and mineral bouquet with ripe yellow stone-fruit aromas intermingled with saline notes of crushed stones. Very elegant and dense on the palate, this is a full-bodied, round and fruit-intense, finely juicy Riesling with fine and ripe acidity and a sustainable mineral expression on the intense, long and saline finish. Promising. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in October 2024.
