The Riesling 120 NN stands in contrast to its limited origins in Odinstal. The vines grow on sandy and clay soils in the Rhine Valley. All fermentation was carried out in stainless steel, with only 5% whole grapes added, a stylistic device Andreas Schumann frequently employs. It boasts an incredibly lean 9.5% alcohol by volume. A true lightweight. With less than 1g/l residual sugar and a crisp 7.2g/l acidity, these are attractive figures for advanced wine connoisseurs. The reason for this is the enormous rainfall there in September 2022. A whopping 110 liters of rain fell per m² at the end of September, so the grapes were saturated. The selection process was extremely laborious, as all the ripe grapes rotted away. Filtered through cellulose in August and lightly sulfurized before bottling.

Bright lemon yellow with green reflections

Nose

It initially appears wild and impetuous. Trusting, yet somewhat shy at the same time. On the nose, it fluctuates between unusual yellow and green aromas. Fennel pollen, a hint of ginger honey, and candied ginger. Unripe papaya and freshly sliced khaki. Lemon, bergamot, and kaffir lime then provide a tart, refreshing component. Seeds of coriander and fennel. A hint of fresh pea and artichoke hangs in the air. Nettle, lemon thyme, mint, and lemon balm then provide a brutal herbal freshness.

Palate

And it maintains precisely this freshness. It is incredibly light-footed, but with structure and a gentle feel. The phenols contribute significantly to its success. Bitterness is so important here, continually challenging the delicate fruit. The herbal freshness, with all its cooling elements, dominates the palate for minutes. Never an iced candy, always more like a fresh herbal extract. It’s so lean and racy that no eye will remain dry. Incredible tension and precision, without missing a beat.
