Product description for Nittnaus Anita & Hans zorra Rosé 2022 (bio)
Info
2022 began in Burgenland with a very dry spring. There was no winter moisture and virtually no rain until June. July and August were very hot. Growth was extremely weak and delayed due to the dry period. The result was extremely small, loose-berried grapes with a high concentration in the must. Zorra 2022 is based 100% on the Zweigelt grape variety. The vines are planted in the Fuchsenfeld vineyard in Halbturn. We are located there on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl, near the Hungarian border. The Pannonian Plateau forms the base, with heathland soils on top. The vineyard contains black earth, quartz, slate, and gravel. After the manual harvest, which took place in two rounds on August 25, 2022, and September 5, 2022, the vines are completely destemmed. After pressing, spontaneous fermentation followed in stainless steel tanks before bottling without fining or filtration on March 10, 2023.
Colour
Bright pomegranate red, light reflections
Nose
The 2022 Zorra Rosé smells wonderfully of sour cherries and freshly pressed pomegranates. Green and red apples add a tart, refreshing effect. Rosehip and red fruit tea increasingly take over the aromatic helm. A touch of juniper, kaffir lime leaves, and blackberry bushes provide ethereal and distinct spice with vegetal accents. It has hints of pyrazine and a vital, woody core. Freshly broken branches smell very similar. Raspberry and elderberry shine discreetly in the background.
Palate
No fire without a spark. We’re lighting that spark with Zorra to burn down the thicket of conventional rosés and blaze new trails. There’s a fire between white and red. That’s what the back label says. The same goes for the wine on the first sip: Wild. Taut. Cool. Invigorating. Spicy. All at once. It seems juicy, but neither dense nor fruity. Robust, yet approachable. Crafted with enormous precision, easy to drink and low in alcohol. That’s how wine, and especially rosé, is contemporary. The Nittnaus family sets off a firework display here.

Score: 88
The 2022 Rosé Zorra is an unfiltered, delicately cloudy, chimney to raspberry red, still very reductive rosé from Burgenland. Clear fruit on the nose is reminiscent of fresh plums, candied cherries and sour cherries. It’s juicy and fresh on the palate, exceedingly fruity but dry and spicy on the finish. Great food companion to cold plates. 11% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in June 2023.
