Product description for Nittnaus Anita & Hans Blaufränkisch Manila 2022 (bio)
Info
A quote from the label (typical of Martin Nittnau). Subversion. And the beauty of this subversion. A very cold but dry spring, late bud break, and flowering was also somewhat delayed. This was followed by a warm June, a few hot days in July, but no heatwave. Finally, good water supply in August, and beautiful sunny weather until mid-September. Harvest began on September 7th. Satisfactory sugar levels with low pH values produced fine, elegant red wines and (perhaps) the best white wine year ever; however, small quantities. The variety of our homeland. Great images and role models. Nevertheless, we want something different. Homesickness. Wanderlust. Manila red 2022 is based entirely on Blaufränkisch, while the white counterpart is a wild cuvée. The vineyards are located on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, in Jois am Leithagebirge. Slate and limestone form the rootstock there. One-third of the harvest is received in whole bunches. The remaining two-thirds of the wine is then destemmed into amphorae for spontaneous fermentation with skins and stems. After a week, the wine is pressed, and the fermenting must is returned to the amphorae. At 2.1g of residual sugar and a demanding 6.5g of acidity per liter, it is bottled on March 10th. No fining or filtration took place.
Colour
Dense purple with violet reflections and a light rim.
Nose
The nose reveals enormous dark fruit and spice. Yet, even at this point, you know that this will be a racy, lean wine. Liquorice, white pepper, and juniper are evident. A subtle peppery spice underscores this. Tree bark and undergrowth complement each other perfectly with the nuance of cocoa butter and melting chocolate. All of this is underscored by the finest, tart fruit. Sour cherries, morello cherry, and cassis stand out. Earthy beetroot rounds it off beautifully.
Palate
And just as expected, the Nittnaus brothers bring the fruit to the table. Manila red is so finely and precisely crafted that I fear it sets new standards in terms of drinkability. It whizzes around with ease. The fruit is just as racy and cool as expected. With a high, yet perfectly measured acidity, this is a miracle of digestibility. Combined with an ethereal note that now becomes significantly more intense, the fruit lingers long on the palate.
