Product description for Nikolaihof Vom Stein, Riesling Smaragd trocken 2004 (bio)
Archive Release 2024.
Origin
The Mautern vineyard “vom Stein” is a so-called “vineyard within a vineyard.” It belongs to the “Silberbichl” vineyard and borders the “Zaum” vineyards in Mautern and “Am Zaum” in Furth. The site covers a full 4.2 hectares and extends north-northeast from 209 to 237 meters up the slope. The vineyard is characterized by riprap soils with clay, loess, and Danube gravel.
Colour
Saffron yellow with light reflections
Nose
Concentrated, clear, spicy aroma. Fully ripe, well on its way to development. With savoury notes of exotic, very ripe fruits: papaya, mango, orange slices. The spice is reminiscent of a spice shop, colourful and sweet, from anise to fennel seeds, roasted pumpkin seeds to bay leaves. A firework display on the nose.
Palate
The delicate acidity complements the coarse texture, and the entire aroma seems to unify in the mouth. A firework display is offered retronasally. At medium intensity, the finish asserts itself with balancing power and good length.

Now 20 years old, the intensely golden-colored 2004 Ried Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd opens with a clear, refined and also intense note of stewed yellow fruits intermingled with the saline terroir as well as saffron, game and white mushroom aromas. Elegant and refreshingly mineral on the palate, this medium-bodied Riesling from Mautern reveals an intense, well-balanced texture with a serious structure and a savory, finely bitter yet also round and aromatic finish with persistent salinity. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.
