The yellow-golden colored 2008 Ried Vom Stein Riesling Federspiel is clear, pure and minerally coolish and fresh yet also pretty matured on the developed nose. Elegant and refined on the palate, this is a light, dry and mineral structured Riesling with a savory finish and fine bitters. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.

Bottled in December 2015, this late release of a 2008 Vom Stein Federspiel leads with pungently smoky, nutty, mossy and lichen-like aromas and a high-toned, piquant suggestion of pistachio and hickory nut extracts. There is, as well, a rather dank and wet stone aspect to the nose, but that represents part of its intrigue, as does a reductive hint of machine oil vaguely reminiscent of certain Loire Cabernet Francs. Juicy lemon and white peach emerge on the palate, though the smoky mineral and moss elements continue to dominate, and the lingering finish pulls in an alkaline, stony and thus slightly austere direction. This fascinating wine is one about which opinions will certainly differ.
