Description

Product description for Nikolaihof Vom Stein, Riesling Federspiel trocken 2006 (bio)

Archive Release 2024.

Origin

The Mauterner Ried “vom Stein” is a so-called “Ried within a Ried”. It belongs to the Ried “Silberbichl” and borders the Ried “Zaum” in Mautern and “Am Zaum” in Furth. The site covers a full 4.2 hectares and extends north-northeast from 209 to 237 meters up the slope. The vineyard is characterized by riprap soils with clay, loess, and Danube gravel.

Colour

Strong yellow, like a ripened delicious apple.

Nose

Enormous variety of ripe, yet fresh fruits without opulence, simply fine and subtle. Alongside a few bright floral and vegetable notes, appealing and stimulating.

Palate

Even the first sip is deliciously fresh, clear, and harmonious. Everything is just right here, from the acidity to the sweetness, alcohol, body, and texture. Not a great wine, but one rich in finesse and perfectly mature, it stands for drinking pleasure and a quick flow. Thanks to its balance, silky notes, elegance, and ultimately unobtrusiveness, you’ll quickly find yourself waiting for another glass.

Wine Advocate

Score: 94

The 2006 Ried Vom Stein Riesling Federspiel is pure yet intense and perfectly matured on the nose that shows ripe and stewed peach aromas intermingled with flinty and tobacco leaf notes. Medium-bodied, vital and vivacious on the palate, this is a light, energetic and ageless Stein Federspiel with fine and stimulating tannin grip, purity and an overall buoyant character. This is an excellent, lighter and stimulating, ageless character. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.

Vinous

Score: 93

This represents the 2014 bottling of a wine that no doubt had the right stuff for a full-fledged “Vinothek” release some years from now, but there was simply not enough cask capacity in the cellar. It’s being sold from the cellar door at the same price as the current 2013 release because, as Christine Saahs remarked with a wink, “We don’t want to do anything to discourage Austrian customers from trying this ‘old’ wine.” Lichen on wet stone; saline and alkaline sea breeze; mothball and apple jack; hazelnut and almond utterly fascinate in the nose, then ally themselves to youthful primary juiciness of lime and white asparagus on a silky palate. Head-scratching intrigue by no means precludes refreshment value on the long finish.
