Product description for Nikolaihof Steiner Hund, Riesling trocken 2017 (bio)
Wine Information
The Steiner Hund vineyard lies above Stein an der Donau and is mostly south-facing, or southwest-facing in the western part. The eastern part is poor soil, primary rock, and little humus; the further west you go, the more loamy inclusions are found. The younger vines (approx. 30-40 years old) and the more productive selections are located in the eastern part of the vineyard; in the west, the terraced soils have an elevation difference of approximately 150 meters, and the lower part is over 80 years old. The individual batches (east/young, middle, and west/old) are harvested and vinified separately. Aging takes place partly in wood, partly in steel. The pre-blend is stored on the fine lees in large, used oak barrels until bottling. Aged for 4 years in large wooden barrels.
Colour
Medium golden yellow.
Nose
The 2017 Riesling Steiner Hund presents itself with lime, orange zest, vineyard peach, and quince jelly; its minerality is intense and gripping. A truly striking opening, youthful and with immense freshness.
Palate
Once on the tongue, its full beauty unfolds. Fruit and stimulating acidity are in beautiful harmony, fine tannins set accents and stimulate the appetite, and the long finish indicates its untapped aging potential. Be sure to decant!

Score: 94+
The 2017 Ried Steiner Hund Riesling is pure, precise, coolish and flinty as well as herbal on the nose. Tight, fresh, intense and mineral on the palate, this is a pure, bright, fresh and energetic, savory and very persistent Riesling with stimulating character and a long, complex finish without too much power. In fact, it is a rather light yet dense and intense Hund. This is what Riesling can do: inspire, salivate and entertain. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2025.

The 2017 Riesling Steiner Hund, formerly called Reserve, was grown in Stein on terraced, stony vineyards across the Danube, and is thus labeled Niederösterreich. Subtle peach and straw on the nose have the slightest floral overtone. Concentrated, buffered and intense, the palate is vivid, with lemony, waxy, yeasty brightness. Those flavors arrive and persist with depth that is long, lasting, enticing and appetizing in its super-salty style. (Bone-dry)
