Product description for Nikolaihof Steiner Hund, Riesling Reserve 2008 (bio)
Archive Release 2024.
Origin
The Steiner “Hund” vineyard stretches above Stein an der Donau in the side valley of the Reisperbachtal. The terraced vineyards are south-facing and lie on a slope of up to 36° at an altitude of 230 to 290 meters. In the eastern part of the vineyard, the vines are rooted in acidic, crystalline gneiss and mica schist with amphibolite. This is supported by a relatively dry rigosol soil with low storage capacity and high permeability. This is where the Nikolaihof estate is located. The western part of the vineyard is characterized by calcareous conglomerate. The name was first mentioned in documents in 1470.
Colour
Straw yellow with golden shimmers
Nose
This quite aged wine may have rough edges in both its aroma and taste, but that doesn’t make it uninteresting—quite the opposite. Alongside dark rose petals, glera melon, and honey, there’s a hint of curry powder, oriental notes, cloves, and turmeric powder.
Palate
The delicate character has relatively little acidity, tastes creamy, soft, juicy, and stimulating. It stimulates the drinker, invites further sips, and seems particularly fresh with its astonishingly youthful flavour. Wonderful to drink, especially as a food accompaniment; while it can’t do everything, it has proven itself a successful player.

From Krems-Stein in the Kremstal yet marketed under the generic Niederösterreich appellation, the 2008 Ried Steiner Hund Riesling Reserve is deep, clear and fresh on the rather coolish, flinty and saline or iodine nose. Round and dense on the palate, this rich Riesling reveals lots of power, texture and tannins but lacks the airy, filigreed and energetic character that is Riesling’s greatest talent. There’s too much Smaragd style here for my taste. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.
