Product description for Nikolaihof Grüner Veltliner Steinterrassen trocken 2012 (bio)
Bottled in 2023.
Wine Information
The Grüner Veltliner Steinterrassen comes from various vineyards in Mautern: warmer sites with a high loess content (especially in the sites east of the town (Silberbichl, Am Zaum)) and cooler, north-facing vineyards (Bischofspoint, in the Weingebirge with a high amphibolite/paragneiss content), partly surrounded by forest. The Grüner Veltliner Steinterrassen is a Federspiel-quality wine, bottled after eleven years of aging in large wooden barrels.
Colour
Light golden yellow with green reflections
Nose
The 2012 Grüner Veltliner Steinterrassen is a wine in which the fruit is already largely hidden behind the herbal spice and the light waxy notes that come with the long aging period. The wine appears Fragrant, deep, slightly zesty, and carried by stony and slightly earthy notes.
Palate
On the palate, the Grüner Veltliner initially appears round and silky, until the insistent acidity becomes increasingly evident. Here, too, the spice of dried herbs, stone, and zest blends, supported by citrus notes, and culminates in a long finish in which the waxy notes of the eleven years of aging once again play a role. All of this appears very complete and balanced.

Bottled after almost 11 years in May 2023, the Wachau 2012 Steinterrassen Grüner Veltliner is still closed on the pure, fresh and intense yet also wild and stinky (a little animal) nose. Tight and a bit untamed on the palate, with a certain share of Brettanomyces that dries out the finish a little, this is a round and elegant, savory and quite tannic Veltliner. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2025.

The 2012 Grüner Veltliner Steinterrassen was bottled in May 2023 after almost twelve years in a 6,500-liter barrel. Lovely smokiness gives this 11-year-old wine a most youthful swing on the nose. The palate, likewise, is vivid with freshness and youthful verve. If I did not know better, I would think this is a much more recent wine. The palate is vibrant and sprightly, alive with white pepper that pervades lemony Mirabelle flesh—slender and bright. This is a lovely, youthful marvel. What enduring freshness. What lovely acidity. What a wine. With lightness, freshness, acidity, vivacity and spice, it is a force of life, with a sheer, endless echo of lemon. (Bone-dry)
