Product description for Moric Lutzmannsburg, Ried Maissner 2021
Roland Velich and his Moric winery have made winemaking history. It began in 2001 with the first vintage of the Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben Blaufränkisch. Since then, thanks in no small part to this wine, a Blaufränkisch style has been established, which is evident in the bottle shape. The name Moric stands for Blaufränkisch wines that stylistically lie somewhere between great Burgundies, Piedmontese, and Syrah from the Northern Rhône, yet are completely unique and possess equally great potential. The greatness of Velich’s wines, however, begins with the simple Blaufränkisch and with both the white and red house brands. These wines exemplify Velich’s claim that wines should be open-minded, inviting, fresh and juicy, complex and easy to drink. In addition to his own ideas, he also supports talented winemakers from neighboring Hungary with his Hidden Treasure Project.

The 2021 Blaufränkisch Ries Maissner was picked in two elevated parcels, one planted in 1908, and the other in 1934/1935, rooting in heavy iron-rich loam and clay on top of the volcanic plateau with some limestone sediments. A pure and serene note of cherry comes with a hint of blood, and a touch of conifer shows on the nose; more air brings a persistent sense of petrichor and wild blueberry. The palate is bright and luminous. Red cherry pierces through earthier, richer, denser tannins, helped along by super-bright acidity, veering from tart red cherry over to Morello and back again. There’s exquisite balance and aromatic echoes of that tart cherry. (Bone-dry)
