Product description for Moric Lutzmannsburg, Alte Reben 2020

Information about the wine

The Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben is a Blaufränkisch selection from the oldest and best vineyards. The Lutzmannsburg plateau was formed on a prehistoric volcano, on which different layers were deposited over time. Today, sediments from the Pannonian Sea can be found in the form of limestone, loam, sand, and clay, as well as deposits of volcanic origin. Six plots were selected for the 2020 Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben. The vines are between 85 and 110 years old. Around a quarter of the harvest is normally fermented as whole bunches with stalks. After the spontaneous initiation, fermentation in open wooden vats usually lasted between three and four weeks. After careful pressing into 500- and 600-liter barrels, the wine rested on its full lees for eleven months, where spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place. The first racking took place after approximately one year. The Blaufränkisch then matured for a further twelve months in 500-liter barrels. There was no fining, no filtration, and only minimal addition of sulfites.

: Deep garnet with violet reflections.

Nose

The 2020 vintage of Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben is a new example of the greatness of the terroir and the skill of the winemaker. The aroma alone quickly reveals the wine’s immense depth. However, this wine isn’t really opened until years later. If you do it now, you should decant it immediately for a few hours. Then the aromas of black cherries, elderberries, and blueberries, some cloves, peat and undergrowth, leaves and essential herbal extracts, as well as some licorice and violets, emerge. What’s truly impressive, however, is the deep, cool mineral note that permeates the fruit and spice.

Palate

It becomes even more powerful on the palate, where the Blaufränkisch already reveals much of its full density and concentration. The fruit described in the aroma presents itself here as an essence with a deep spice and florality. The Lutzmannsburg manages to appear broad-shouldered and firm, yet at the same time energetic, prancing, bubbling, and vibrant. It’s a wine of great stature and structure, with a perfect tannin framework and a clarity rarely found. A wine outside of time and space, large, deep, and seemingly never-ending, yet at peace with itself and ready to continue growing for decades to come.

Wine Advocate

Score: 96+

The Blaufränkisch Burgenland 2020 Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben comes from the oldest vines in Lutzmannsburg, which includes not only the three crus that had been singled out in 2019 but also other crus here that are too small to market them separately. This wine delivers all the ripeness, fruit intensity and concentration that Moric has been known for for almost 20 years. The wine is less precise or transparent compared to the crus, but it’s dense and complex on the nose (and palate), which is ethereal and spicy and immediately begs for a decanter. Here, the wine is rich, textured and elegant, unfolding its greatness only on the finish that leaves the concentration and power of the first palate for purity, mineral freshness and endless salinity. Tannins, acidity and phenolics as well as body and concentration are in great balance here, yet at this early stage, the wine needs a lot of space and time to breathe and reveal its secrets step by step. This is definitely a wine to cellar for years, just like Clos Nouveau Bourgueil from Gauthier. That means this old-vines Lutzmannsburger may reach an even greater drinking experience in 10 years. I wouldn’t miss it. 13.5% stated alcohol. Tasted in Lech in December 2022.
