Product description for Michael Andres Reiterpfad Hochseel -N- 2021 (bio)
Christina Hilker: On the palate, the 2020 Riesling Reiterpfad Hochseel “N” opens with pure, cool freshness combined with plenty of juicy fruit and distinct citrus notes. At the moment, it’s still somewhat reserved, appearing very profound and complex, and captivating with a delicate tartness in the long finish. Some ageing will suit it well, even though its fresh and zesty character is already incredibly seductive and intoxicating at this point.
Info
The wines of the N series represent an experimental and highly creative playground for Michael Andres. Small batches here experience maximum freedom and time in every process. Spontaneous fermentation and no applied filtration unify them all. N stands for Natural, No Filtration, No Limits, and Next Level. The Hochseel vineyard is located within the Forster Reiterpfad (Forest Trail). Close to the forest, it has slightly lower temperatures and calcareous soils. It is fermented spontaneously in barrel vats, where malolactic fermentation also takes place. The wine matures on the full lees until racking in June 2022.
Colour
Bright lemon yellow, green reflections
Nose
A quiet, shy appearance on the nose. The herbal component far exceeds the fruit. Lemon balm, chervil, thyme, and a hint of cress buzz in the glass. A hint of lemon zest and freshly grated ginger join in. White tea and fragrant jasmine blossoms lend it delicate, elegant notes. Crushed coriander seeds and fresh fennel provide ethereal and vegetal nuances.
Palate
The sensory concept continues on the palate. Initially taut and lean. The acidity finds a fine nerve, but does not dominate. Rather, it elevates the stoniness and saltiness to another level. The herbal aromas reappear only faintly. The ethereal nuance clearly dominates the finish, and the vegetal notes continue. It appears incredibly austere and, for a Riesling, wonderfully lean, with surprisingly little fruit.

Score: 93
From the forest and with limestone in the soil, the 2021 Reiterpfad Hochseel Riesling –N– offers a deep and concentrated, still a bit reductive, yeasty and phenolic nose that indicates serious substance and iodine complexity with bright and refreshing lemon aromas. Elegant and juicy on the palate, this is a full-bodied and round, persistently saline and supple dry Riesling with a creamy texture and intense and generous fruit with fine tannins on the finish. It’s definitely a wine that needs to be cellared for at least three or four years. It was vinified in a 500-liter tonneau and bottled straight from the barrel with 30 milligrams per liter of added sulfur. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in June 2023.
