Product description for Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc AOC 2022 (bio)
Info
Approximately 6% of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation is used for white wine production. This ratio also roughly reflects the situation at Domaine de Marcoux. Although far more grape varieties are permitted and common, this cuvée is composed of 69% Roussanne, 29% Bourboulence, 2% Clairette, and Grenache Blanc. The vines are planted primarily in two plots on clay and colluvium, a layer of alluvial sediment and limestone from the Cretaceous period. Of this, 0.5 hectares of Roussanne are located in Les Esqueirons, planted in 1987 and facing west. 0.35 hectares of Bourboulence are found in Les Bousquets. The remaining amount is made up of Clairette and Grenache Blanc, which are planted in small quantities across many plots. After selection in the vineyard and on the sorting table, the whole grapes are pressed, and the must is then transferred to steel tanks for natural sedimentation. Alcoholic fermentation of the clarified must is stopped at 17°C. The wine is then racked off the full lees, and continues to age on the fine lees in steel tanks and demi-muids. No malolactic fermentation is attempted, and the wine is bottled after approximately seven months of aging.

Nose
This type of aromatic composition on the nose never ceases to amaze me, as I so rarely experience it in a glass. Ripe apricot meets dried fruit with oriental spices and Mediterranean herbs. That’s roughly how you could summarize it. The associations with stone fruit are undeniable. Apricot, peach, and mirabelle plum appear in many facets. In dried form, apricot, a hint of date, and fig are also recognizable. It is clearly reminiscent of Ras el Hanout. A mixture of cumin, turmeric, pepper, cloves, coriander seeds, cardamom, and other spices. Saffron and fresh ginger also stand out. It shows its Mediterranean side through lavender, garrigue, and thyme.
Palate
This diversity of aromas is also evident on the palate. It starts powerfully, but by no means overloaded. The fruit hits the palate in full force. Here, too, a combination of stone fruit and dried fruit. It also directly reveals its stony substance. Together with the acidity, this silky mouthfeel is refreshing. The fruit certainly provides us with warming thoughts, but thrives on this alternating bath. Its spicy side is particularly evident in the finish. A very harmonious, round wine with plenty of aromatics but very good balance.
