Description
Majas shouts out on the labels. Blanc or Rouge. Côtes Catalanes. The first 12%, the second 12.5%. Both amazingly fresh, lively, stimulating. Long a byword for natural wine. And from the deepest south? Thanks to a fortunate meeting between winemaking couple Alain and Agnès Carrère and cult winemaker Tom Lubbe. The couple owned 30 hectares of vineyards in the northwesternmost tip of Roussillon on the foothills of the Pyrenees, far from the shimmering heat of the plains. With gnarled Carignan, Grenache, and Macabeu vines, the oldest of which Alain’s ancestors planted 130 years ago, as well as more modern varieties. But they were at a dead end when they met Tom in 2007. The very next day, they started to convert to organic farming under his guidance. In the cellar, Tom banned all additives. Only natural yeasts, no manipulations, minimal sulphur. This has given their wines a soul that they never had before, Alain Carrère says happily.
