Nose

Steffen Mugler’s wines convince me more and more each year. The fruit is increasingly clearly defined. The wines appear subtle and elegant. This is also the case with the 2023 version of the Maikammer Kirchenstück Riesling. Its nose is restrained and definitely on the clear, bright side of aromas. Nashi pear, white peach, and a hint of kiwi come to mind. Plenty of freshly squeezed lime as well as the zest of bergamot and lemon. It has some hints of vegetal aromas, so that fennel, pea, and fresh seeds can be found. It also spreads a wide range of herbal aromas. Lemongrass, lemon balm, lemon thyme, coriander, and mint lead this array of aromas.

Palate

It is precisely this ethereal freshness, full of olfactory impressions, that is seamlessly transferred to the palate. On the palate, it presents itself clearly and very precisely. With what feels like almost zero grams of sugar, the fruit pushes forward vigorously, supported by the taut but well-integrated acid structure. Lemongrass and mint, in particular, take the aromatic helm here. It is chalky, angular, and extremely consistent. Its stony base provides additional cooling impressions. It has a purist feel and demonstrates what dry Palatinate Riesling stands for. With great energy and excitement, it remains stable in the glass for minutes and lingers long afterward.
