Product description for Loimer Gumpoldskirchen Grosse Reserve Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature NV (bio)
Fred Loimer should really be a geologist by profession. The terroir he cultivates in the Kamptal and the Thermenregion is so diverse that it’s easy to lose track. The winery is located in Langenlois, the central municipality in the wine-growing region. The northern part is dominated by the basement of the Bohemian Massif, with gneiss and mica schist, and in the Heiligenstein region, also sandstone. Towards the Pannonian Basin, the rocks are often covered in meters of glacial loess, and towards the Danube, one finds thick gravel terraces of the ancient Danube. It is a true pleasure to compare the different Grüner Veltliners with one another or to taste the three top-seeded Rieslings side by side. In Gumpoltskirchen, the wines demonstrate how similar the Thermenregion is to Burgundy. All wines, regardless of terroir, are always authentic, profound, and complex, yet never bold or loud.

The 2016 Gumpoldskirchen Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature Grosse Reserve is pure Pinot Noir from the Thermenregion. Bottled in September 2017 and disgorged without dosage in April 2021, this sparkling wine opens pure, deep, fresh and delicate but also intense and complex on the nose and could easily be held for a Blanc de Noirs Champagne in terms of finesse and mineral purity. There are lovely lemon and brioche aromas on the bouquet that displays cherry and raspberry aromas in a very fine, vinous way and pairs these with notes of crushed stones. The wine reveals a very delicate and smooth mousseux, and it is highly refined and elegant but most of all enormously mineral, complex and long with a vinous, finely grippy, food-friendly and iodine-inflected finish. This is a spectacular, complex sparkling wine. 12% stated alcohol. Tasted in January 2022.

The NV Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs Gumpoldskirchen Grosse Reserve is a blend of 73% Pinot Noir, 15% Sankt Laurent and 12% Zweigelt. It spent three years on lees and opens with a powdery, inviting sense of Red Delicious apple and springy sponge cake. The palate is a picture of lightness–this is Pinot Noir channeled into slender creaminess, with subtle mousse on a body that trails redcurrant and tart apple. It displays lightness with lovely depth of flavor and a long, bone-dry, elegant finish. This is a light-footed Blanc de Noirs with real poise. Zero dosage. Disgorged: September 2023.
