Product description for Lejeune Pommard 1er Cru “Les Poutures” AOC 2020
Information about the Wine
The Pinot Noir fruit comes from the Les Poutures vineyard in Pommard. This 1er Cru is located just south of Les Rugiens, near the village, and is characterized by limestone, clay, and loam in a fairly humus-rich soil layer. The wine was produced in the typical Lejeune style: each vat was filled to about 30% with whole grapes. These were mashed with the feet to release enough juice to begin alcoholic fermentation, which is triggered by the action of natural yeasts present in the cellar atmosphere and on the grape skins at harvest time. The whole grapes are then placed on top of the mash. This phase of alcoholic fermentation lasts five to seven days and is called semi-carbonic maceration because many berries ferment whole rather than as pulp. The entire fermentation takes around three weeks. The wine is then transferred to wooden barrels containing around 30% new wood. It is lightly sulfurized before bottling, but not filtered or fined.
Colour
Medium, slightly transparent cherry red
Nose
The 2020 Les Poutures appears approachable and open, with notes of red fruit and red flowers, overlaid with a hint of smoke. As usual, the nose of this wine is rather restrained at this young stage and needs time. Then, a hint of undergrowth and peat, earth, and tobacco emerge. Above this are juicy notes of cherries, plums, and pomegranate seeds, as well as a sweet scent of peonies.
Palate
On the palate, the 1er Cru is sweet and sensual with notes of cherries, berries, and plums, without lacking in freshness. A slight warmth lingers over the fruit, which is simultaneously interspersed with a delicate acidity. The aromas of this blend of wild berries, cherries, and dark stone fruit, tobacco, spices, and tonka beans are certainly very sexy. The tannins are also present, yet pleasantly smooth. This is a Pommard with structure and charm, earthiness and sensuality at the same time.
