The Emilio Valerio winery is located in Tierra Estella, the coolest subzone of the northern Spanish DO Navarra. It cultivates around 40 hectares of vineyards spread across 70 plots. Limestone and sandstone soils, as well as vineyards located at (some) over 600 meters above sea level, are the defining terroir characteristics. The white wine “La Merced 2018” is a blend of the indigenous grape varieties Garnacha Blanca, Malvasia, and Viura. The grapes come from biodynamic cultivation, and the wine aged for 10 months on the fine lees in a combination of 600-liter oak and acacia barrels, including a smaller portion of new wood.

Nose

The nose is mineral, fresh, and almost cool, offering aromas of yellow apple and quince. The fruit expression is complex and ripe, yet crisp. Overall, the bouquet has good depth and intensity.

Palate

The La Merced 2018 combines flow and complexity. The white wine has plenty of body, tension, and creaminess. The wood is fabulously integrated and contributes to the multi-layered texture and aromatics. The ripe, sweet fruit and the subtle herbal bitterness in the lingering finish form a beautiful, attractive pairing. This wine is both drinkable and interesting. It has personality and is also an excellent alternative to some white Riojas that share a similar style.
