Product description for Lacourte-Godbillon Chaillots, Premier Cru Extra Brut 2015
Geraldine Lacourte and her husband Richard Desvignes’ winery is located in Ecueil, in the heart of the Petit Montagne de Reims. They focus entirely on the 1er Cru vineyards in this location, which means they have short distances to travel and spend a lot of time in their vineyards. The business converted to organic viticulture in 2016. Both have seen a lot of the world and only decided late in life to take over the winery from Geraldine’s parents. Geraldine worked in marketing in Germany for years, so the winery’s style is modern rather than outdated. The base wines are fermented in stainless steel and do not necessarily make the malolactic fermentation (MLF). Only a portion is aged in barriques. Very clear, precise, and taut, they reflect their origins, always characterized by their fine fruit and elegant depth. The 2015 Parcellaire Chaillots 1er Cru is made from 100% Pinot Noir and comes from vines that are an average of 55 years old, grown on sand and tuff. The grapes were harvested by hand, and the must was aged in used 300-liter barrels. The wine matured for five and a half years in the cellar until it was disgorged on December 16, 2021, and a slim two grams released as an Extra Brut.
Colour
Dark straw yellow with onion-skin reflections and fine mousse.
Nose
On the nose, the 2015 Chaillots Premier Cru from Lacourte-Godbillon peels away layer by layer. Initially, autolysis notes dominate thanks to the long time on the lees: the crumb of fresh rye sourdough bread and toasted notes float like zeppelins over the overall appearance. With increasing aeration, red berries like wild raspberries and strawberries emerge, ethereally balanced by the oil of fully ripe blood oranges. Salted butter is undoubtedly in play, and mineral aspects like oyster shells or wet blackboard chalk are not left unnoticed.
Palate
The perlage is so delicate, delicate, and almost subtle on the first sip that it is more reminiscent of glittering stardust than regular carbonic bubbling. It illuminates the overall appearance of this powerful, red-fruity champagne, which illuminates the palate with ripe, broad-ranging acidity. Multi-layered, distinctive, and complex, this champagne clearly leaves the reception setting and points with a confidential nod toward the table, to sophisticated and elaborate cuisine.
