Description

Product description for La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat “Les Quarts” AOC 2022 (bio)

Wine Information

The Les Quarts vineyard is undoubtedly one of the best terroirs in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The beautifully situated vineyard faces southeast and is home to 48- to 80-year-old Chardonnay vines on siliceous, particularly iron-rich, clay and limestone soils from the Bajocian (Jura) region. Since 2008, the vineyard has been plowed by horse. Harvested by hand from August 26 to 27, 2022, whole-bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation, followed by aging for 17 months, initially in barrels and foudres for 11 months, and then in foudres with 100% malolactic fermentation. Total sulphur is 29 mg/l. The pH is up to 3.18.

Colour

Light golden yellow

Nose

The 2022 Les Quarts presents itself with quite waxy notes that combine with tart citrus notes and ripe stone fruit. There are also memories of verbena and catnip, some pastry with lemon curd, and a hint of toffee.

Palate

On the palate, the Pouilly-Vinzelles appears tranquil, balancing between juicy, lining fruit that initially reveals more stone fruit and yellow pome fruit than citrus. These, however, become increasingly intense over time, along with the tart, zesty notes and acidity, which builds tension and creates momentum. The finish is slightly salty with a hint of caramel, but also tart notes, some tobacco, and tannin.

Vinous

Score: 93

The 2022 Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat Les Quarts comes from 50 to 85-year-old vines at the top of the slope. It has a very detailed bouquet. It’s minerally and lightly spiced with a touch of peppermint coming through with aeration. The palate is cohesive on the entry, perhaps with a touch more weight than the Les Longeays, fresh with a slightly honeyed finish, evidencing the warmth of the growing season. Give this a couple of years in bottle because it has huge potential.
