Description

Product description for La Soufrandière Pouilly-Fuissé Climat “En Chatenay” Zen AOC 2022 (bio)

Wine Information

The Bret brothers cultivate a plot of just 0.69 hectares in the Climat En Chatenay in Puilly-Fuissé. It lies at an altitude of 250 meters and faces northeast. The Bret brothers share the site with the Comtes Lafon. Located below the Roche de Vergisson, the plot is characterized by reddish-brown clay on limestone. The vines are 55 years old. The harvest took place on September 2, 2022, by hand. This was followed by whole-bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation. The Chardonnay was then aged for 17 months, initially in used barrels and, after blending, in neutral cuvées. 100% malolactic fermentation took place. The wine was only lightly sulfurized before bottling. The total sulphur content is 21 mg/l. The wine has a pH of 3.17.

Colour

Light golden yellow

Nose

The Pouilly-Fuissé En Chatenay Cuvée Zen smells of pastries with lemon curd, salted lemons, and green and yellow pears. Added to this are some lanolin and a slightly smoky note, along with a few lightly toasted hazelnuts. Everything appears ripe, fresh, and juicy.

Palate

On the palate, this is a juicy, bright, fresh, and lively Chardonnay with agile acidity that, together with tart, zesty, lemony notes and a hint of salt, is very mouthwatering. This is a very pure expression of Pouilly-Fuissé without any airs and graces, but with crystal-clear, bright aromas.

Vinous

Score: 90

The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Climat En Chatenay Cuvée Zen has a little SO2 added just before bottling. I actually prefer this on the nose to the Au Vignerais cuvée since it has more terroir expression and is fresher and more saline. The palate is well-balanced, with a twist of sour lemon mixed with orange rind on the entry. It shows fine depth but is not as viscous as the Vignerais, though I find more complexity amongst the Domaine’s Pouilly-Vinzelles this year.
