Product description for La Soufrandière Pouilly-Fuissé Climat 1er Cru “Au Vignerais” AOC 2021 (bio)
Wine Information
The Bret brothers own 0.49 hectares in the Climat Au Vignerais vineyard in the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. Located on the southern slope of the Roche de Solutré at an altitude of 310 meters, the vineyard is planted with 35-year-old Chardonnay vines on ferrous red clay and limestone soils from the Bajocian (Jura) period. Hand-harvested on September 21, 2021, the wine was whole-bunch pressed and fermented spontaneously, followed by aging for 17 months in seven- to 18-year-old barrels with 100% malolactic fermentation. No fining or filtration. The pH is 3.27, and the total sulphur content is 58 mg/l, depending on the barrel. In 2021, the winery lost 50% of its harvest due to late frosts and hail.
Colour
Medium straw to golden yellow with light green reflections
Nose
The 2021 Pouilly-Fuissé Au Vignerais is sensual in its aroma, yet still a little shy. It needs air and time for the notes of salted lemon and lemon zest, iodine and wax, fennel seed, and crunchy stone fruit to unfold.
Palate
On the palate, the wine lives up to its excellent reputation. Even though the Bret brothers lost 50% of the potential harvest due to the weather, the remaining 50% managed to create an elegant, sophisticated, and sensual wine. The intensity of the fresh and creamy lemon notes is just as appetizing as the chalky and iodine notes. In 2021, the wine is particularly clear and bright, with a vibrant acidity. The longer the wine lingers on the palate, the saltier and more powerful it becomes. Alongside the saltiness, the minerality also becomes increasingly insistent and vibrant – right up to the long, juicy finish. This is definitely cru quality.

Vinous
Score: 92
The 2021 Pouilly-Fuissé Climat Au Vignerais 1er Cru has a captivating bouquet with mineral-rich green apple and wet limestone/petrichor scents. Fine delineation and precision. The palate is taut with fine grip. There’s satisfying depth and a racy malic line of acidity. It’s pretty concentrated toward the finish. The 2021 retains linearity towards the persistent finish. I would seek this out post haste.
