Wine Information

The Mâcon-Vinzelles “Le Clos de Grand-Père” is the little brother of the Pouilly-Vinzelles “La Soufrandière.” It comes from a plot that belonged to Jean-Guillaume and Jean-Philippe Bret’s maternal grandfather, who in turn inherited it from his maternal grandfather! The vines, whose average age is 60 years, are located at the bottom of the Pouilly-Vinzelles hill. They are planted in a very old clos on a rocky vein of hard limestone. The 1.1 hectares lie at an altitude of 200 meters and are dominated by Jurassic Bajocian limestone and clay. The vines are between 40 and 110 years old. The grapes were harvested on September 4, 2023. After whole-bunch pressing, the wine underwent spontaneous fermentation. This was followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine was vinified 10% in barriques and 90% aged for eleven months in stainless steel tanks. It has a pH of 3.47 and a total sulphur content of 28 mg/l.

Colour

Light golden yellow

Nose

The Mâcon-Vinzelles is a juicy, ripe Chardonnay that strikes just the right balance between warm and cool notes. It smells of yellow apples and pears, lemons with zest, yeast plaited bread, and a hint of blond tobacco and sage.

Palate

On the palate, the Chardonnay is charming and open, with juicy, robust apple fruit, some citrus, and greengage. The wine appears ripe, showing extract and a hint of sweetness, a touch of cream, yeast, and anise. The Bret brothers harvested later this year, and the typical character of Mâcon is much clearer here, without sacrificing precision and freshness in the wine.
