Product description for Kühling-Gillot Riesling Pettenthal GG 2022 (bio)
Information about the Wine
As with all vineyards on the Roter Hang in Nierstein, the Pettenthal is characterized by Rotliegend, a red weathered rock composed of slate and sandstone, and in the flatter parts of loam and clay. The higher the elevation, the more barren the soils become and the deeper the vines’ roots must be planted. The central parcel of Kühling-Gillot lies at an elevation of around 140 meters, has a gradient of more than 70%, making it the steepest vineyard in all of Rheinhessen. Humus is scarce in this vineyard, which is why the vines must have deep roots in the rock. The wines are harvested by hand after strict selection, the must is spontaneously fermented, and carefully aged in single barrels.
Colour
Medium straw yellow
Nose
The Pettenthal is emblematic of the style that HO Spanier prefers in his winery and in the winery of his wife Carolin. Here, it’s not about fruit, but rather about the liquefaction of a specific place. This has been achieved again in a remarkable way with the 2022 vintage. There is a hint of floral scent and zest, smoke and lemon balm, yeast and crushed rock that rises from the glass like a veil of mist.
Palate
On the palate, it becomes slightly smoky again, then grippy, powerful and full of tension. There is little fruit but plenty of rock, extract and a deep minerality at play. It’s a Riesling whose arc stretches far into the distance and into the future, but which already appears absolutely precise, vibrantly alive, with an energetic acidity and an elegant texture. Like its Wonnegau counterpart, the 2022 Frauenberg, this is also a fabulous, elegant wine, yet still in the process of becoming.

Score: (93-95)
The 2022 Riesling Niersteiner Pettenthal Grosses Gewächs beguiles with a shy hint of orange blossom and wet stone. This is followed by yeasty reduction, intense creaminess and aromatic lemon. This parcel is underneath the forested crest of the hill, shading half of the vineyard in the afternoon. The lemony intensity, that mouth-watering juiciness, defines the concentrated mid-palate. Tingling white pepper blends in with white citrus pith to deliver textural interest. The 2022 has drive, energy and a lovely echo of lemon zestiness. The finish is super-clean, balancing ripe fruit with freshness. (Bone-dry)
