Wine Information

The vineyards in the Oppenheim area are no longer directly influenced by the Rhine, and their amphitheater-shaped design allows them to ideally retain heat, allowing the grapes to ripen harmoniously. Unlike the soils around Nierstein, where red slate soil predominates, the soils around Oppenheim are very calcareous and characterized by limestone marl formations. With a layer of soft, windblown loess, they are ideal locations for Burgundy varieties. The idea for this wine, first bottled from the 2012 vintage, arose from observing this plot. Crisscrossed by a solid limestone clod, the grapes ripen somewhat more slowly here. Carolin and Hans Oliver took advantage of this unique micro-location. Through consistent thinning, accompanied by strict selection during the harvest, they are able to harvest perfectly ripe, small-berried, healthy Chardonnay grapes. Information on the aging

Nose

What an aroma wafts towards us – matchstick, yellow fruit, orange, vanilla, and freshly creamed butter underpinned by wild herbs, undergrowth, forest floor, and porcini mushrooms. A powerful and complex Chardonnay with a Burgundian flavour and at the very beginning of its exciting development. You practically want to inhale it.

Palate

On the tongue, the 2021 Oppenheim Chardonnay Alte Reben is powerful and complex, challenging the palate with a distinctive yet delicate tannin structure. A wine with fantastic aging potential that will reward the patient taster, as it will develop even more complex and multifaceted with further aging. Great aging potential! Be sure to decant and enjoy from large glasses, not too cold.
