Nose

The nose is like a kaleidoscope or the compound eye of a fly, revealing incredible complexity and variety. Lightly spicy notes at the beginning are reminiscent of white pepper and light rolling tobacco, before the noble-rot aroma of the botrytized berries shines through and is underpinned by light carbolic notes reminiscent of a good Islay whiskey. This is followed by quince paste, peach syrup, and honeycomb, rich and dripping, before an old leather armchair and a jar of floor wax enter the picture. A bowl of raisins on the table. Still life.

Palate

On the first sip, the 2001 Essencia from Királyudvar seems to contain the 464 grams of residual sugar surprisingly well. Viscous on the palate with an oily texture and high density, it is reminiscent of Darjeeling tea, orange oil, and candied orange peel, balanced by a ripe and refined acidity. A firework of flavours with an ambrosial finish and a promise for the next 50 years—minumum.

The 2001 Tokaji Esszencia is the essence of sweet wine from Tokaji. Blending 70% Furmint with 30% Hárslevelű from the Danczka vineyard this amber-colored wine is vinous like honey. The nose is enormously deep and concentrated and the aromas are still discreet but substantial. Leather, tobacco, truffle, apricot, sweet chestnuts and licorice notes on the nose lead to an oily textured, terribly sweet but refined and elegant sweet wine with great appeal and balance. The wine is smooth and toasty, and the sweetness is by no means sticky or beyond finesse. This is a textured, highly elegant and even lively Essencia that was fermented and aged for 78 months in 100% glass demijohns. It was bottled with 4% alcohol and 464 grams per liter of residual sugar that is balanced by a total acidity of 10.3 grams per liter (pH: 3.47). Tasted in March 2019.
