Wine Information

The Tokaji Cuvée “Ilona” is a late-harvested blend of 60% Furmint, 25% Hárslevelű, and 15% Sárga Muskotály grapes from the Betsek, Suba, Danczka, and Lapis vineyards. The harvest took place from October 26 to 28, 2016. The wine was aged for five months in a 2.5-hectoliter Slavonian oak barrel and bottled at 10% alcohol, 158 g/l residual sugar, and 9.1 g acidity at a pH of 3.26.

Nose

The Tokaji “Ilona” has an almost reserved, subtle, yet very elegant and delicate aroma of candied orange peel, kumquats, and ripe stone fruit. Added to this are notes of black tea, a touch of Turkish mocha with cardamom, beeswax, and Cointreau.

Palate

On the palate, this is a viscous, concentrated, expansive dessert wine that is nevertheless bursting with energy. More than 9 grams of acidity mercilessly pushes the large amount of residual sugar across the palate, ensuring freshness and vitality. Both the residual sweetness and the acidity, together with the ripe, juicy, partly fresh, partly raisined fruit, and the slightly spicy spiciness, work seamlessly together, flowing into a never-ending flow. In the finish, all this is paired with a subtle saltiness and a hint of black tea. The acidity of this vintage will once again ensure that Tokaji “Ilona” can be aged for decades.
