The south-facing slate slope is heated by the sun during the day. But at night, cold air from the surrounding Hundsrück heights cools it down again. The soil consists of red slate, rich in clay minerals. This constellation of soil and climate is unusual and produces characterful, unique wines with the potential for world renown. Following Christoph Tyrell’s retirement, his cousin Albert Behler took over the winery. After a period of reorientation, Mathieu Kauffmann, a major name in the wine industry, was hired as Technical Director. With his very first vintage, he made a clear, qualitative statement. He boldly embraces organic viticulture and experiments with biodynamic practices. There are probably few places on the Moselle where these ideas can be implemented so well.
