Nose

On the nose, El Corallón reveals dark fruit, plenty of spice and vegetal notes. Juniper, black and red pepper are present in the glass. Black olives, as well as artichokes and beetroot, add both Mediterranean and earthy accents. Rosemary, thyme, and sage follow suit in an ethereal way. In addition to plums, morello cherries, elderberries, and mulberries are prominent. Rosehips and figs round it out nicely.

Palate

The region’s great strength is its ability to handle the day-night amplitudes. The dark, spicy fruit can be fully realized. Fortunately, on the other hand, it experiences a crisp acidity and presents itself rather cool. This makes it appear compact and elegant at the same time. Despite the high alcohol content, nothing stands in the way of drinking pleasure. It unfolds on the palate with plenty of power and structure. Pleasant bitterness blends with a light extract sweetness to create a harmonious experience. The fruitiness is similar to the nose. The earthy nuances and Mediterranean accents, whether based on vegetables or herbs, are clearly noticeable in the finish, but always in an unobtrusive, elegant way.

I tasted a very young and fruit-driven 2020 El Corralón, an entry-level red produced with Garnacha and 15% other grape varieties from Méntrida and matured in concrete and oak containers for nine months. It’s primary, aromatic and attractive with a medium-bodied palate, medium ripeness (it’s 14.5% alcohol) and with abundant, fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021.
