At the domaine, founded in 1919, Thomas Bouley has overseen an unstoppable rise to the top of the Volnay appellation since 2010. Meticulous vineyard management and his impressive feel for wood and tannins produce wines with power and substance, finesse, pure fruit, and rondeur. Bouley’s vineyards are located primarily around Volnay, but also in Pommard, Beaune, and Meursault. His main focus, however, is definitely Volnay, where he creates an impressive range, from the declassified Bourgogne Côte d’Or to the village wines and 1er Crus, which reflect the terroir with great precision and demonstrate the high quality and balance that can be achieved in this corner of Burgundy.

The 2022 Volnay Clos de la Cave now incorporates some younger vines that were planted with high-quality selections of “Pinot Fin,” which seems to only have amplified its floral, ethereal style. Wafting from the glass with notes of peonies, orange zest, rose petals and violets mingled with sweet red berries, it’s medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a suave, textural profile and a long, mineral finish. As readers may remember, it derives from a sloping parcel just below the tree line that’s shaded earlier in the evening than climats situated lower down the slope.
