Product description for Huet Le Mont Moelleux 2022 (bio)
Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, the 2017 Le Mont Moelleux is already impressively complex. The 53 grams of sweetness are by no means intrusive; on the contrary, you wonder where the wine has hidden it, so clearly balanced is the sweetness by the 4.9 grams of acidity. The wine is extremely harmonious and precise. The acid structure and vital minerality are particularly inspiring, as are the fine notes of Indian spices, tart oranges, and stony components. In the long finish, the honey-like sweetness, paired with salted almonds, appears in a furious, long finish. What a harmonious wine and what potential!
Wine Information
Le Mont lies above the tuff caves and east of the Huet winery on the first plateau of Vouvray, the so-called Première Côte, and faces south. It was first mentioned in the 15th century and has been highly valued ever since. Like the other two vineyards, Le Mont, with its nine hectares, is solely owned by the Huet estate and was acquired by Gaston Huet in 1957 as the last of the three vineyards. Its topsoil is several meters deep, consisting of pebbly, sometimes fist-sized flint, known locally as perron, in deep green clay. The base is the usual Turonian tuff limestone. The harvest began in 2022 on September 8th (the second earliest date in the winery’s history) and ended six weeks later (the harvest workers have never harvested for so long before; this year there were 24). Since heat waves and drought led to very heterogeneous ripening grape material, all variants of Chenin Blanc could be produced, from the base wine for Pétillants to 1er Trie. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and spontaneously fermented during the many harvests. Malolactic fermentation only took place in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. Moelleux at Huet means between 45 and 55 grams of residual sugar. In this case, it is 51 grams.

Nose
The 2022 Le Mont Moelleux is already reminiscent of clearly reminiscent of the 2022 Le Mont Demi-Sec, except there’s more of everything and everything is more densely interwoven. Here, too, the stony and smoky, the dark and almost mystical nature of this vineyard dominates. Here and there, aspects of kumquats, apples, and ripe pineapple flash up. Added to this are notes of curry leaves and apple peel. Overlying this lies the scent of crushed quartz so typical of Le Mont.
Palate
On the palate, the 2022 Le Mont Moelleux also presents all the greatness of the Demi-Sec, only in a more concentrated form. And although, at 51 grams, it has almost twice the residual sugar of its lighter sibling, you only notice it to a limited extent here because it is so excellently balanced by acidity and minerality. The Moelleux has plenty of grip and a clear phenolic character, as well as plenty of ripe fruit, and tart notes of grapefruit and bitter orange, tobacco, and rock. In the finish, the wine reveals a fascinating blend of flint and salt. The wine is, of course, only at the beginning of its development, which will easily last two decades. But this balance of fruit and stone, along with its bitter and piquant aspects, already commands considerable respect.
