Description

Product description for Huet Le Mont Moelleux 1ère Trie 2020 (bio)

Sebastian Bordthäuser: On the palate, Le Mont Moelleux 1èr Trie is dense, with high viscosity and great complexity. With candied fruit, raisins, dried figs, and apple rings, the fruit seems to be in the foreground. The acidity is ripe, lively, and of the finest structure, operating like a computer program in the background. The tannins equip it with everything it needs for a long life. With firm pressure on the palate, it has a fresh drinking pull and immense tension that accompanies it into the ambrosial finish with an epic aftertaste. This is one of the wines that established the worldwide reputation of the great, noble-sweet Vouvrays.

Wine Information

Le Mont lies above the tuff caves and east of the Huet vineyard on the first plateau of Vouvray, the so-called Première Côte, and faces south. It was first mentioned in the 15th century and has been highly valued ever since. Like the other two vineyards, Le Mont, with its nine hectares, is solely owned by the Huet winery and was acquired by Gaston Huet in 1957 as the last of the three vineyards. It is characterized by several meters of deep topsoil, namely a siliceous, sometimes fist-sized flint, known locally as perron, in deep green clay. The base is the usual Turonian tuff limestone. The 2020 harvest took place between September 7 (the earliest date in the winery’s history) and September 25. Because the vintage was characterized by strong sunshine and warmth, the wines produced were primarily residually sweet. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and fermented spontaneously. Malolactic fermentation occurred only in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. Le Mont Moelleux “Première Trie” is a residually sweet wine, made from the first grapes affected by botrytis. Residual sweetness in this case means 91 g/l.

Nose

There’s no doubt about it: Le Mont Moelleux “Première Trie” has become a powerful and concentrated “Première Trie.” It opens with notes of ripe, browned apples with their skins, oranges and their zest, apricot jam, mango chutney, and pickled quinces. This ripe fruit is accompanied by walnuts and tobacco, herbs, and rock.

Palate

On the palate, Le Mont Moelleux “Première Trie” is lush, yet also smoky. The fruit is opulent, dense, and sweet, like a separate dessert course, but this sweetness is placed in the context of salty and savoury notes, accompanied by an underlying minerality and extract. This Chenin Blanc thus appears elegant and noble. The acidity is rather restrained here, but still permeates the wine and gives it a pleasant bite. This Vouvray is far from reaching its drinking window, but it is well worth watching as it develops to its full potential.
