Product description for Huet Le Haut-Lieu sec 2022 (bio)
Wine Information
The Haut-Lieu is the vineyard that is the origin of the Huet winery. The Huet family first visited the village of Vouvray in 1928 and was so impressed by the property that now forms the winery and the five-hectare Le Haut-Lieu vineyard that they acquired both and founded the Huet winery. Le Haut-Lieu lies on the Vouvray plateau and is characterized by deep brown clay with a small amount of flint and chalk in the topsoil. The topsoil is called Aubuis locally. The bedrock consists of yellow tuffeau limestone, and it lies four meters deep. The harvest began in 2022 on September 8th (the second earliest date in the winery’s history) and ended six weeks later (the harvesters, this year there were 24, have never harvested for so long). Since the vintage was heterogeneous and heat waves and drought led to very heterogeneous ripening grape material, all variants of Chenin Blanc, from the base wine for Pétillants to 1er Trie, could be harvested. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and spontaneously fermented during the many harvests. Malolactic fermentation only took place in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. The residual sugar in this 2022 wine is 5.6 grams.

Nose
The 2022 edition of the dry Chenin Blanc from Huet’s oldest single vineyard, Le Haut-Lieu (1928) is a wine that possesses lightness and density, effortlessly channeling its complexity into a drinkable, floral character. It smells of blossoms, especially wild roses, plenty of apple and pear with a touch of skin, and a hint of hibiscus. The wine is reminiscent of cool iced tea, not artificial, but homemade with peach.
Palate
The 2022 edition of Le Haut-Lieu Sec is a sensual, silky, and dense wine that currently appears most open and refined. It offers elegant fruit in a blend of white-fleshed stone and pome fruit, some wax and tobacco, with superbly integrated acidity. The alcohol is not noticeable. As is typical, the wine offers a fine, piquant bitterness of zest and herbs with light hints of green nuts. It’s a pure Haut-Lieu with slightly chalky minerality, an elegant acidity, and a slight salinity, tempting you to drink this wine now and again. You can do that, but you should keep a few bottles for later; the Chenin Blanc will, of course, continue to evolve brilliantly.
