Nose
The nose of the 2018 Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux is as complex as ever. On the one hand, bready, doughy, and spicy. Dark bread crusts take on shortcrust pastry and a hint of yeast pastry. Abundant white pepper with coriander seeds, saffron, and turmeric provide oriental spice. Peach, apricot, and mirabelle plums present themselves fully ripe. The fruit appears candied and expansive at times. Pear and quince compote, seasoned with a hint of cinnamon, practically flows from the glass. Behind this is always the slightly smoky note of lime and wet chalk. Freshly chopped almonds, cinnamon blossom, and coconut sugar provide a successful finish.
Palate
Huet has an ingenious ability to blend high complexity with a pleasantly pleasant sweetness. It is flattering on the palate with a delicate sugar tail. Contrastingly, it has a cool undertone and is clearly characterized by a linear minerality. The acidity drives it forward, ensuring freshness and vibrancy. The sweetness never lingers or falters. It is skillfully interrupted again and again. Pure energy on the palate. The aromas on the nose are similar: brilliant, radiant, and precise. In the aftertaste, saffron and turmeric linger alongside the pear compote.

The 2018 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux is clear and seductively ripe on the elegant, still yeasty nose with a mineral backbone and its chalky background. Sweet and lush but fine and filigreed on the palate, this is a salty, frisky, elegant, densely woven and well-structured Haut-Lieu with fine tannins and a long, complex finish that is rich and finessed at the same time, with lingering piquancy and stimulating salinity. This 2018 is a very charming but also serious Chenin Blanc with fine tannins, good tension and aging potential. Tasted in May 2019.

The 2018 Moelleux Le Haut-Lieu is a gorgeous, exotic wine. Jasmine, lemon oil and ginger lead into a core of green orchard fruit as the 2018 shows off its considerable charms. A wine of absolutely exquisite beauty, the 2018 is precise and sculpted, with its sweetness very nicely integrated.
