Product description for Huet Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 1ère Trie 2020 (bio)

Wine Information

The Haut-Lieu is the vineyard that marks the origins of the Huet winery. The Huet family first visited the village of Vouvray in 1928 and was so impressed by the property that now forms the winery and the five-hectare Le Haut-Lieu vineyard that they acquired both and founded the Huet winery. Le Haut-Lieu lies on the Vouvray plateau and is characterized by deep brown clay with a small amount of flint and chalk in the topsoil. The topsoil is called aubuis locally. The bedrock consists of yellow tuffeau limestone, and this lies four meters deep. The grapes for the Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux “Première Trie” were harvested in 2020 between September 7 (the earliest date in the winery’s history) and September 25. Because the vintage was characterized by strong sunshine and warmth, the wines produced were primarily sweet. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and fermented spontaneously. Malolactic fermentation only occurred in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux “Première Trie” is a residually sweet wine, made from the first grapes affected by botrytis. In this case, residual sweetness means 71 g/l.

Nose

Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux “Première Trie” from the Le Haut-Lieu vineyard differs from the Moelleux from the same vineyard in its greater sweetness and a higher proportion of perfectly sorted botrytis berries. The result is a bouquet that, while still offering the lively Moselle character of this vineyard, also has a slightly mustier note of pears and apples, even quince and a hint of mushroom. The always light-footed Le Haut-Lieu appears somewhat more concentrated and dense here, displaying notes of oranges, herbs, and a hint of light tobacco, chalk, and persimmon.

Palate

On the palate, the Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux “Première Trie” spreads out across the entire surface and is silky, calm, and sensual, flattering and initially quite opulent. But then the acidity shoots into the ripe yellow fruit and spice, providing the necessary freshness, making the Chenin Blanc juicy and lively, and, especially in combination with notes of salted almonds and lemons, truly makes your mouth water. In this Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux “Première Trie” you will find all the typical Le Haut-Lieu characteristics and so much acidity and concentration that you don’t have to worry about the long-term future of this wine.
