Product description for Huet Clos du Bourg sec 2023 (bio)
Wine Information
The Clos du Bourg lies above the church of Vouvray and comprises six hectares surrounded by an old stone wall – hence the name “Clos.” It is one of the oldest Grand Cru parcels in France. It was first mentioned in the 7th century. The vineyard’s shallow soil consists of clay with flint and chalk inclusions. It is located on a typical Turonian tuffeau limestone cliff. Here, the vines reach the tuff after just one meter. In 2023, the vineyards in Vouvray were severely affected by Drosophila suzukii, the spotted-wing drosophila. This required rigorous quality management. Huet already conducts multiple harvests per vineyard for the individual Chenin Blanc varieties. This year, every single berry had to be inspected, and at least 25% of the harvest was rejected. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and spontaneously fermented during the many harvests. Malolactic fermentation occurred only in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids.
Colour
Intense straw yellow
Nose
The Clos du Bourg is once again a wonderful success in 2023. While 2022 had a very bright sound, the 2023 wine is somewhat fuller and the wine somewhat more yellow-fruity with hints of ripe quince, kumquat, pecans, and a touch of blossom honey on a lightly buttered, warm brioche.
Palate
On the palate, the Vouvray is very precise and clear, with tension and punch, yet sensual and juicy with an elegant, fresh acidity. In addition to quince, pear, and yellow plum, there are also notes of tart apple must, a hint of Earl Grey, and rock. It’s a complex, full-bodied Chenin Blanc with power, but also a prancing lightness and sensuality, a delicate texture, and plenty of underlying energy.

Score: ?
The 2023 Vouvray Sec Clos du Bourg Sec is a bit muted at this stage, but this tasting is only three weeks after bottling. It’s also closed on the palate and needs time to come around. This isn’t where it ought to be. The concentration is there, and the classic amplitude and curves are there with a super line and frame, but it just needs to get over its bottle shock. I’m going to come back to this wine in a couple of months.
