Product description for Huet Clos du Bourg demi-sec 2020 (bio)
Wine Information
The Clos du Bourg lies above the church of Vouvray and comprises six hectares of vineyards surrounded by an old stone wall – hence the name “Clos.” It is one of the oldest Grand Cru parcels in France, first mentioned in the 7th century. The vineyard’s shallow soil consists of clay with flint and chalk inclusions. It is located on a typical Turonian tuffeau limestone cliff. Here, the vines reach the tuff after just one meter. The 2020 harvest took place between September 7 (the earliest date in the winery’s history) and September 25. Because the vintage was characterized by strong sunshine and warmth, the wines produced were primarily sweet. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and fermented spontaneously. Malolactic fermentation only occurred in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was matured in used demi-sec barrels. At Huet, demi-sec means between 15 and 25 grams of residual sugar. In this case, it is 20 grams.

Nose
The 2020 Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec is quite closely related to the Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec in this vintage. Both possess a playful lightness reminiscent of the Moselle, combined with ripe fruit and a light aroma of stone and herbs. The Clos du Bourg, however, is appropriately a little chalkier, a bit firmer, and a touch darker. Yellow citrus fruits and zest meet crisp apples and pears, dried herbs and blond tobacco, and finally, fresh apple cider. A touch of smoke and flint are also present.
Palate
On the palate, the wine begins silky and warm, or, as Rebecca Gibb MW writes on Vinous: “Drinking the 2020 Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec is like taking off your shoes after a long day of hiking and dipping your feet in warm water: pure contentment and relaxation.” Le Clos du Bourg begins with almost drinkable pome fruits, stone fruits, and some citrus fruits, but here it reveals itself in an almost juicy way. The sweetness lies primarily on the tip of the tongue, behind which the spice and acidity are hidden for a short time. Then, however, both emerge clearly, and suddenly the aromas swirl in a whirl of freshness and saltiness. The Chenin Blanc has volume and concentration, but they never become too heavy. Quite the opposite. The wine dances across the tongue despite its power, despite its 13.5% ABV, and despite the slightly dark spice. This seems extremely tempting, and as so often in recent years, one doesn’t know how one can force oneself to allow this wine several more years of bottle aging while simultaneously denying oneself this pleasure for so long. And yet, this wine will still develop wonderfully over time.
