Product description for HM Lang Riesling Riede Steiner Schreck “This is not a love song” 2019 (bio)
Information about the wine
This is a Riesling from 80-year-old vines from Steiner Schreck plots, which are cultivated according to Demeter standards. The Steiner Schreck lies around 320 meters above sea level and is one of the steepest sites in the Krems Valley. It is characterized by Gföller gneiss and granite. The Riesling was harvested at an equivalent of 11.5% ABV on September 8, 2019. It was pressed extremely slowly over two days on a self-designed 100-ton wooden press. The pressing process itself is completely reductive, but afterward the juice is given time to brown, meaning it is deliberately exposed to oxidation. The juice is fermented spontaneously and aged for two and a half years on the full lees in a 1,000-liter Bordeaux earthenware amphora, which allows for micro-oxygenation similar to that of a large wooden barrel. During fermentation, Lang adds 3 to 5% destemmed grapes, which ferment intercellularly (as in carbonic maceration), thus continually restarting the fermentation process despite the constant 9°C in the cellar. Later, the wine is minimally sulfured. It was bottled unfiltered and lightly sulfured in February 2021 with 0 g/l sugar and 8.0 g/l total acidity.
Colour
Light to medium golden yellow with light green reflections
Nose
The nose of this wine is extremely subtle at first, and the Riesling is barely detectable. It currently needs air and time—lots of air and time. When it gets both, the result is a complex and sensual masterpiece with notes of verbena and white blossoms, lemons and a few tangerines, mirabelle plums and crisp peaches, a touch of lanolin, and an impressive spiciness reminiscent of anise, gravel, and pepper. Overlaid with notes of roses and white blossoms.
Palate
On the palate, the Riesling from Steiner Schreck appears salty, fresh, crystalline, and clear, with a fairly punchy acidity at the beginning and, despite the long aging, still a noticeable carbonation that only dissipates over time. What initially seems taut becomes increasingly silky, juicy, and piquant over time, with plenty of mouthwatering salt in the long, almost electrifying, powerful, yet always elegant finish. The new vintage of a truly unique Riesling!

Score: 93+
Pressed for two days and fermented and aged with natural yeasts in a stoneware amphora for 2.5 years in Lang’s rock tunnel, the 2019 Riede Steiner Schreck Riesling This Is Not A Love Song opens with a coolish, clear, intense and spicy-flinty as well as herbal/floral bouquet of crushed stones and just-ripe vineyard peaches and sweet mirabelles. On the palate, this is a pure, crystalline, fresh and tensioned yet still also tight and even stringent dry Riesling that was made for the long-distance run. The finish is electrifying, saline and piquant and indicates great aging potential. This is a thrilling Riesling from Krems-Stein. Bottled unfiltered in March this year. 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in June 2022.
