Description
Product description for Henri & Gilles Buisson Saint-Romain rouge “Sous Roche” AOC 2022 (bio)
Information
The Saint-Romain Sous Roche 2022 comes from the vineyard of the same name in the eastern part of the appellation. The Sous Roche vineyard faces east and lies at an altitude of 350 to 350 meters. The vineyard has limestone soil, known as Calcosol sur Marne de Saint-Romain, and is planted with 60-year-old vines. After hand-harvesting, partial destemming and spontaneous fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, followed by a mixture of pigeage and remontage, i.e., punching down and overflowing of the pomace cap. Malolactic fermentation took place spontaneously in barrels. Aging lasted for ten to twelve months in a mixture of 228-, 350-, and 500-liter barriques and tonneaux, of which no more than 10% are replaced annually. The wine was tasted daily, and the barrels were racked whenever Frédéric Buisson deemed it appropriate. It was fined with bentonite and filtered very coarsely. Sulfur was added only during bottling, with a maximum of 40 to 50 mg/l total sulfite.
Colour
Fairly transparent purple red
Nose
The Saint-Romain Sous Roche 2022 has a rather reserved, if not shy, aroma. This remains unchanged even after decanting. It smells faintly of cherry, raspberry, and plum with slightly warm puff pastry and lukewarm peat.
Palate
On the palate, the Sous Roche opens up and becomes smooth and sensual. The fruit appears ripe and still pleasantly crisp in parts, with hints of sour cherries. There’s a hint of extract sweetness in this overall dry Pinot Noir, which offers a successful clarity and structure. The tannins are firm, yet ripe and not overly present, the acidity clear, and the wine has a good grip, with a light earthy and herbal flavour.

Vinous
Score: 89
The 2022 Saint-Romain Sous Roche has an airy bouquet offering raspberry and cranberry fruit with touches of undergrowth coming through with aeration. The palate has a little chewiness on the entry, the tannins here a little more pliant than the Beaune reds with a hint of white pepper towards the finish. Give it a year in bottle.
