Product description for Heinrich Salzberg 2018 (bio)
The Salzberg is a sun-drenched, south-facing site located directly above the winery. It encompasses a wide range of soil formations, from clayey-silty to chalky to sandy-gravelly, providing perfect conditions for Blaufränkisch (and Merlot). The Salzberg is a dry site, resulting in small, thick-skinned, yet highly aromatic and extract-rich grapes. The grapes are hand-picked, spontaneously fermented, and left on the skins for three weeks in wooden fermentation stands. They are then gently pressed using a basket press and aged for 48 months in 500-liter barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Colour
Dark ruby red with a black, opaque core.
Nose
The 2018 Salzberg from Gernot and Heike Heinrich is not a wine that immediately embraces you and indulges in clumsy familiarity. You sense that composure is called for here if you want to approach it, and you quickly realize that you can be rewarded with something great if you only have a little patience. Concentrated dark fruit, heart cherries, plums, and mulberries, followed by dark and earthy notes. Forest floor, coffee, and dark chocolate alongside mild spices like black cardamom and tonka bean currently only hint at what the Salzberg will be capable of with a few years of bottle aging.
Palate
On the palate, too, it currently reveals itself more as a promise than in true greatness. It undoubtedly needs several years in the bottle to blossom into its full stature. Powerful and immensely tense, it almost threatens to burst on the palate, speaking with quiet tranquility of extract and concentration, yet remains transparent and silky on the palate. The tannins are delicate, like a low-pile carpet, with a mouthfeel like fine sandpaper. They lend it its stimulatingly tart astringency with notes of dark chocolate. The acidity operates nonchalantly in the background, coordinating the powerful structure on the palate. The carafe is obligatory in its youthful stage, as is the large bowl.
