Product description for Heinrich Roter Traminer Freyheit 2021 (bio)
Information about the wine
The Freyheit is a single-varietal red Traminer, a wine from the family that also includes Savagnin (white to yellowish) and Gewürztraminer (copper-coloured). It comes from fossil-rich limestone with eroded mica schist in Kollern near Breitenbrunn. It was harvested at the end of August, spontaneously fermented, and left on the skins for 14 days, then slowly pressed with a basket press. This was followed by six months of aging in 600-liter cellar amphorae. Afterward, it was bottled unfiltered and without the addition of sulfur. Please swirl the bottle beforehand to incorporate the sediment into the wine. Ideally, the wine should be decanted.
Colour
Slightly cloudy, shimmering orange with light copper reflections
Nose
The Red Traminer Freyheit is one of the great individualists among Austrian wines. It leaves no doubt as to which grape variety family it comes from, with its aromas of lychee, rose petals, oranges and orange blossoms, mandarins, and aromatic hops. The wine also recalls candied ginger, Earl Grey, and Szechuan pepper. This is as charming as it is unusual, and that’s exactly how it should be.
Palate
On the palate, the Red Traminer Freyheit delivers a dense texture of fine bitter substances such as grapefruit zest, floral notes, and red and yellow fruit. The wine is dense, full-bodied, and grippy with its phenolic texture, round and warm, yet also lively and cool in its acidity. The sweetness suggested by the aroma isn’t there. With 1.2 grams of residual sugar, the wine is rather bone dry, thanks in no small part to the aging in cellar amphorae, which provides a special dry texture. Here, too, there are hints of hops, nutmeg, rose, orange, and ginger. Added to this is salt in the intense and lively finish. A truly unique wine!
