Description

Product description for Heinrich Graue Freyheit 2022 (bio)Graue Freyheit is a wine that defies any stereotyping: This cuvée of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and Neuburger is a white wine whose colour is characterized by the contact of the Pinot Gris skins with the mash. The Pinot Gris grows on crystalline slate and quartzite slate soils on the Joiser Hackelsberg and Windener Spiegel. The Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, which come from the limestone and slate-rich eastern slopes of the Leitha Mountains, are mostly planted in the top vineyards of Breitenbrunner Edelgraben and Windener Alter Berg. Harvested manually from late August to mid-September, fermented spontaneously, and sometimes left on the mash for up to two weeks, Graue Freyheit matures for 17 months in amphorae and in used, large oak barrels.

Colour

Rosehip red, bright and clear.

Nose

Initially shy on the nose, notes of red fruit, cranberry, white mulberry, and rosehip emerge after a vigorous shaking of the glass. Overall rather taciturn, the aromatic expression is anything but brash, but rather considered and cautious.

Palate

What the 2022 Graue Freyheit von Heinrich suppresses on the nose, it unleashes all the more uninhibitedly on the palate: The juicy fruit is refreshingly disciplined thanks to the phenolic input from the maceration time. Red apple peel, orange oil, tart kitchen herbs, and rosehip outline its aromatic nature, fueled by the ripe, broad, and subtle acidity, which lends it verticality and length. A highly pleasing representative of its varieties and genre with an elevated gpm (gulps per minute).
