Product description for Heinrich Chardonnay Leithaberg DAC 2023 (bio)
Grown on the limestone and slate-rich eastern slopes of the Leitha Mountains, this Chardonnay comes from the Spiegel, Kirchberg, and Alter Berg vineyards in Winden, as well as Fügler in Jois. Grapes from the Edelgraben and Zwergbreiten vineyards in Breitenbrunn also flow into the cuvée. Harvested by hand at the beginning of September, the grapes rest on the skins for a few hours before the must is spontaneously fermented. The malolactic fermentation also takes place spontaneously during the 17-month aging on the lees in large wooden barrels.
Colour
Light lemon yellow with a silvery rim.
Nose
The 2023 Leithaberg Chardonnay from Gernot and Heike Heinrich initially presents restrained mineral notes: wet blackboard chalk, wet pebbles, and a hint of citrus open the nose, followed by lemon balm and cucumber leaves. As the wine becomes more aerated, yellow stone fruit and distinctive earthy aromas of angelica follow.
Palate
The initial sip is taut with a firm bite and a spicy-tart core. The pointed acidity is superbly integrated and carries it with a creamy melt, phenolic edges framed by tight tannins on the tongue. Stimulatingly tart with juicy extract and a delicately saline finish. Focused, compact, and straightforward. Top!
