Description
Product description for Franz Keller Schlossberg Achkarren Spätburgunder GG 2021 At the Franz Keller winery, the third generation, Friedrich Keller, has been in the starting blocks for some time now. In recent years, Friedrich and his father, Fritz, have managed the winery together and made decisions, and Friedrich is increasingly taking over the reins. He is a winemaker through and through and lives and breathes wine. He now wants to consistently take the Franz Keller winery to the next level. His father, Fritz, already based the winery on a natural approach. Friedrich is now converting completely to organic farming and is slowly exploring biodynamic aspects. Quality has been improved in recent years, and now the company is taking the next step by divesting itself of lesser-known sites, reducing the area and streamlining the product range.
Info
The VDP. Große Lage Schlossberg in Achkarren is home to Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The core of the site is sheltered from the wind and has an extremely steep slope. The accumulated heat is an important characteristic of this historic location. Fritz Keller was aware of the uprooting of the old vines in this location at the time. He wanted to protect the genetics immediately. Although the owners at the time had no successor, the old vines were saved only after Fritz Keller could prove that he had a grandmother from Achkarren. Since 2009, a plot of black volcanic soil and a dry-stone wall up to 4 meters high has been added to the old vines at the core of the estate. This preserved piece of cultural heritage stretches over a length of 150 meters. A mass selection process has secured the future of this ancient vine material. All Pinot Noirs at the Franz Keller winery are aged in barriques. For the Erste Lage Oberbergen Bassgeige, the proportion of new wood is low at 10-20%, but even in the GG range, this quota rarely exceeds 35%. The 2021 Schlossberg from Achkarren is exactly 35%. The Pinot Noir matures in barrels for 18 months.
Colour
Bright cherry red with delicate violet reflections and a light rim.
Nose
The Schlossberg from Achkarren is exceptionally dark. The renowned VDP. Great location appears dark and mystical. Just like Burgundy, the grape variety has no place on the front label. Pure origin. It thrives on black currant, raspberry, and blackberry, as well as a generous portion of sour cherry. A subtle touch of juniper and black pepper supports it. It shows its floral side in the form of hibiscus, violet, and pansy. A hint of hazelnut builds slowly and pushes its delicate, shy herbal spice into the distance.
Palate
The Schlossberg rises above everything else. Dense, compact, yet silky cool and delicate. Its dark fruit flows into a fine stream. It emphatically makes room for the fruit. It’s tightly woven, yet with a clear fruit profile. Its spice is evident in the form of white pepper and a touch of fennel seed. A fine tannin accompanies it, coating the mouth. It lasts for minutes and lingers. Sustained. Dense. Long-lasting. Persistent.
